Week 1
Course: AI-Powered Resumes
Features
I plan to use video lectures and multimedia presentations as the key features of my course. Much of the content will be step-by-step walk-throughs using online resources, so I believe screencasts and media presentations will be an effective way to deliver the content.
Because the content is very topical (artificial intelligence), I believe linking to online readings and resources will be critical to providing the most up-to-date content. I will be linking to specific, specialized podcasts that will allow students to choose to listen to the most current information. The incredibly fast churn of new information on this topic is very challenging, and I think sharing dynamic resources is the best way to address this issue.
In the previous course, I found creating multiple-choice and true/false quizzes helpful for wrapping up a section before moving to new content.
Again, because of the speed at which new information is available, including a discussion forum will allow for the sharing of resources and news. A large part of the course is applying the knowledge to the student’s resume, so many of the assignments will involve tailoring their resume to specific job opportunities.
I’m still unsure about peer review and collaboration. Resume documents contain a lot of personal information, and for personal security reasons, I’m not sure having them shared in a class forum would be a good idea. I will continue to evaluate this option.
One of the early modules I have planned includes sample resumes, job postings, and evaluation sites. I think these real-world scenarios will be critical in encouraging the practical application of concepts.
LMS Choice
After reviewing TalentLMS and Canvas, I decided to use Canvas. I did like the interface and simplicity of TalentLMS, but I think the course will be more challenging to share. As suggested in the lecture, I have contacted Canvas support to ask them to change the visibility settings on my free-for-teacher (FFT) account to public, but I have not heard back yet.
I chose Canvas for several reasons. I have used it in the past as a Career Advisor; we had several cohorts use it as a test. I’ve not used the free version before, but I hope the functionality is all there. I find the dashboard and side navigation to be intuitive, and I look forward to trying out the quiz function. I also believe there is a wide adoption of Canvas, so I think many students will be familiar with the interface. I’m very interested in the Canvas Mobile App and look forward to trying that out. While SCORM files cannot be imported, I was able to embed an index file from an Adobe Captivate module and it is running without issue.
Resources
-
Canva has a robust community on the Instructure site (https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Canvas/ct-p/canvas) that includes resources, socials, and links to several subpages. There are almost too many links and options here, but I hope to be able to find the necessary resources.
-
YouTube has many excellent creators of Canvas support videos, and I’ve found their content to be really helpful and easy to follow. The ‘Angie Teaches’ and ‘Learning with Mrs. Lambert’ channels have great content, and it looks like Canvas has many tutorials as well.
